Following a disappointing season last year, the Windsor Jr. Spitfires are poised for a huge bounce back year and are legitimate contenders for the Alliance Championship.
After a five win season last year, the Minor Midget program was down in the lower tier of the Alliance. But there had to be a sneaking feeling of excitement just looking at what the Bantams were doing last season. The bantam Jr. Spitfires assembled one of the best records in the league and went six games in the finals before losing to the Waterloo Wolves. It shouldn’t come as a shock to expect more big things from the minor midget team this year because nearly every player from the bantam team last season has returned.
16 of the 17 players from last years Windsor club are back with the lone exception being goaltender James Walker, who came over from Sun County while last years goalie Kody Williams went to the Panthers in what I guess you could call a trade (in the loosest sense in minor hockey). Everyone else is back and that includes starting goaltender Eric Pillon and star defenceman Owen Lalonde. Lalonde is highly touted as a player to watch this season and one of the best defenceman going into the 2016 OHL Priority Selection Draft.
The Jr. Spitfires will open up their season tomorrow as they begin play in the Toronto Titans Tournament. They will begin their season on September 19 when they travel to Brantford for two games against the 99ers. Even before they begin their season, I will call Windsor as the sleeper team in my books who will compete with the top teams all season long.
