Following a couple of years as a part of the cream of the crop, the Huron-Perth Lakers were a little shell shocked last season as they drop into the middle of the pack. Heading into this season, the Lakers have their sights set at the top of the league.
When you take look back at the Major Bantam squad from last season, they played very strong offense while keeping tight defensively. They were the highest scoring team in their division and consistently played tight games against powerhouses like Kitchener and Hamilton. With all that said, it’s no surprise that the Minor Midget team will include 13 returning players.
In addition to the 13 returning Laker players, a few more imports have joined the squad. A pair of new defencemen have come over to solidify an already stout D. Daniel McCutcheon moves over from Cambridge while Trent Buchanen transfers over from Sarnia. Meanwhile, former Jr. Ranger Craig McKague joins the team to add a bit more scoring punch.
The exhibition season started off on what I would call a fairly positive note. Taking on an Elgin-Middlesex team that has high expectations this season, the Lakers were yet again able to play a tight game and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Lakers showed their offensive side in a 7-2 win against the Guelph Gryphons. In their third and final exhibition game, the Lakers again played a tight game with the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs. In this instance, they were on the wrong end of a 4-2 game, which included an empty net goal.
The Lakers will open up their regular season in Cambridge on September 12th against the Hawks.
